Marriage Licence

The Clerk's Department issues marriage licenses and can conduct a customized civil marriage ceremony to suit your needs and preferred location.

Marriage Licences

Now available in the Town of Minto, couples can apply for a Marriage Licence using ServiceOntario's online system.

Visit ServiceOntario's Online Application Portal, and when asked search for Town of Minto.

A Marriage Licence is valid for use anywhere in Ontario for a period of three (3) months from the date of issue.

Please Note

The Town of Minto requires that appointments be made to issue Marriage Licences, we are no longer able to take walk ins.

Two pieces of ID are required for both parties. Bring an original Birth Certificate plus valid photo ID such as a passport, driver's licence or Canadian Citizenship.  A health card is not an acceptable form of ID.

If divorced in Canada, your Original or Court Certified Copy of the Certificate of Divorce or Decree Absolute.  A Divorce Judgement / Divorce Order is not acceptable proof of divorce. 

If divorced outside of Canada, you will need to send the following documents to ServiceOntario:

  • marriage licence application form: completed and signed
  • statement of sole responsibility: for each divorce (signed by both people who are planning to get married and a witness)
  • legal opinion letter: from an Ontario lawyer, addressed to both people who plan to get married, giving reasons why the divorce or annulment should be recognized in Ontario
  • divorce decree or annulment: an original or court-certified copy in English or French. If the decree is in another language, you will need to include a translated copy and an affidavit sworn by a certified translator

The marriage license fee is $140.00. 

Payable by Cash, Debit, or Cheque. 

Civil Marriage Ceremonies

The Town of Minto offers simple Civil Marriage Ceremonies performed by one of our three (3) Officiants. Services can be held at the Municipal Office located at 5941 Highway 89, in Harriston in the Council Chambers during our office hours by appointment only. No alcohol, confetti, bubbles, rice, candles, or incense allowed on Town property.

Additional dates, locations, and times may be arranged at the officiants discretion.  Certain dates and times will not be available throughout the year including some statutory holidays. 

Please have a look at the Town guidelines, we will help customize your ceremony with you.

  • A valid marriage licence (may be obtained at pre-wedding consultation)
  • Current government issued photo ID
  • Payment for Civil Ceremony (cash, cheque or debit only)
  • Names & addresses of two witnesses
  • Any materials to be incorporated into the ceremony.

Council Chambers Ceremony During Office Hours: $282.50 ($250.00+HST)
Municipal Employee Witness $22.60 ($20.00+HST)

After Hours or Off Site Ceremony: $423.75 ($375.00+HST)*
Rehearsal Fee: $113.00 ($100.00+HST)*
*Are subject to additional charges dependent on Officiant's Expenses and Mileage ($0.70/km)

A non-refundable deposit of $56.50 ($50.00+HST) is required at the time of booking and will be deducted from the ceremony fee which is due in full a minimum of one (1) week prior to the ceremony. Please note this fee is non-refundable in the event of a cancellation.

Marriage Certificates can be obtained from ServiceOntario approximately 10 weeks following the date of marriage.
