Town of Minto Purchases Downtown Palmerston Building to Support Attainable/ Affordable Housing

For Immediate Release: Minto, November 4, 2026

MINTO,ON - The Town of Minto has purchased the property at 212 Main Street West in Palmerston, taking an important step toward providing more attainable/ affordable housing options while supporting the future of the downtown core.

The building includes seven (7) residential apartments and three (3) commercial spaces. The purchase is funded through the Wellington County Housing Development Fund and supports Council’s commitment to exploring more housing options for people at different stages of life and with different needs.

“This is an opportunity for the Town to address a real community need while making better use of an existing downtown property,” said Mayor Dave Turton. “Attainable/ Affordable housing is important to the future of Minto. This project will help provide housing options for residents while also supporting a vibrant downtown Palmerston.”

The Town hopes to begin work on the property soon, with the goal of making the apartments available during the first quarter of 2027. The project will bring existing residential units into use and help maintain housing options within the community.

The three (3) commercial spaces also present an opportunity to support downtown activity and local business. The Town will work toward filling these spaces, helping contribute to a welcoming and active Main Street.

The project aligns with Council’s strategic priorities, including exploring a greater mix of housing options for all income levels and supporting a strong, vibrant local economy. By investing in an existing property, the Town is taking a practical approach to meeting housing needs and contributing to the long-term stability of the community.

“This is about looking ahead and making the most of opportunities that can benefit Minto for years to come,” added Mayor Turton. “Working with Wellington County has helped make this project possible, and we look forward to moving ahead and seeing the benefits for our community.”
The Town of Minto will share further updates as work progresses.
