Winner of multiple awards at Cannes, The President’s Cake is a moving and unforgettable film that takes us into 1990s Iraq through the eyes of a young girl named Lamia.

Lamia lives with her ailing grandmother in a remote village, where everyday life is shaped by poverty, scarcity and uncertainty. When she is chosen to provide a cake for her class’s mandatory celebration of Saddam Hussein’s birthday, what should be a simple school responsibility quickly becomes an overwhelming challenge. With few resources and no easy way to get the ingredients she needs, Lamia sets off on a journey into the city with her grandmother and her beloved pet rooster, Hindi.

What follows is a touching and sometimes heartbreaking story of childhood, determination and survival. As Lamia meets people along the way, the film reveals the difficult realities of life under poverty and authoritarian rule, while also highlighting the resourcefulness and resilience of its young characters.

Beautifully filmed with a natural, almost documentary-like style, The President’s Cake offers a powerful glimpse into a world far removed from our own, while telling a story that feels deeply human and relatable.

Join us at the Norgan Theatre for this special film screening and experience this award-winning story for yourself.
